A spiritual initiation rite is a dictatorial process where those at a higher level guide the initiate through to a new way of thinking, putting the initiate on a new path. In the context of ritual magic an initiation is considered to cause a fundamental change to begin within the person, using both the material and spiritual methods to influence the subject. Isolation reduces the opportunity to escape. It also helps disorient and makes the abused more dependent on the abuser. The degree of success is based on power and control over the abused person's physical, emotional, and mental isolation. If you control the mind, you can control them all.
An important element of psychological control is the isolation of the victim from the outside world. Isolation includes controlling a person's social activity: who they see, talk to, where they go; any method to limit their access to other people. This includes limiting what someone can read, insisting on knowing where they are and requiring permission for medical care.
Enhancement is caused by including economic abuse, thus limiting the victim's actions as necessary resources to decrease ability to resist or escape from the abuse. Smearing or discrediting the abused in the community so the abused does not get help or support from others, or is even caused to turn others in that are not going along with the program. These tactics are used to divide and conquer.

Instances can range from the denial by an abuser that previous abusive incidents occurred to the staging of bizarre events by the abuser with the intention of disorienting the victim.
